Melbourne Resident Killed While Walking in Center of Brevard County Road
It was close to 6:30 on the morning of Monday, February 15th, while a 41-year-old woman from Melbourne was walking along a Brevard County road, that a car being driven by a 59-year-old Melbourne resident approached the area of the street where the pedestrian was walking. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of the car told them that the pedestrian was walking in the middle of South John Rodes Boulevard, close to the intersection of Rogers Place when the fatal pedestrian accident occurred. This stretch of roadway also lies close to the ramps that take motorists to Interstate 95 as well as U.S. 192.
The driver of the car either failed to spot the pedestrian – who was not walking in a designated pedestrian zone, but was instead, according to the driver, in the middle of the roadway – or they believed there was enough room for them to pass safely by the 41-year-old. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and when the car reached the location where the pedestrian was walking, the moving vehicle struck the 41-year-old with considerable force. The pedestrian was knocked to the ground, remaining there until paramedics and EMTs reached the scene.
Emergency response crews – including the emergency medical staff – were notified about the accident by the driver themselves, who called 9-1-1 shortly after striking the pedestrian. The driver remained at the crash site while authorities sped to the area. When the Florida Highway Patrol arrived, the driver of the car cooperated with them throughout the preliminary parts of their investigation. The driver of the car, as is often the case in car accidents involving pedestrians, was not injured in any way as a result of the crash.
The pedestrian, however, was gravely injured, although alive when the emergency medical teams reached them. Working as quickly as they could, paramedics loaded the pedestrian into an ambulance and rushed her to a nearby hospital. It was reported that the pedestrian died sometime after arriving at the medical center.
While the Florida Highway Patrol conducted their initial investigation into the crash South John Rodes Boulevard was closed and motorists rerouted along parallel roadways.
An investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing.
