Two Teens Killed During a Car Crash on U.S. Highway 27 in Lake County
According to preliminary collision reports from officers with the Lady Lake Police Department, two teenagers were killed and two others were injured during an auto accident early Sunday morning in a construction zone on U.S. Hwy. 27/441 in Lake County.
Investigative authorities with the Lady Lake Police Department have indicated that it was close to 3:15 a.m. on April 24, 2022, when 18-year-old Fruitland Park resident Xander Babcock was driving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with 3 other passengers in the southbound direction of U.S. Hwy. 27/441. As the young driver approached a section of the highway that is currently under construction near the intersection of Water Oak Boulevard and Teague Trail at a rate of speed that was purportedly too fast for road conditions, the teenager failed to maintain control of his vehicle and struck a curb. The Elantra then crashed through several safety barricades within the construction area before rolling over and coming to a stop in a roadside ditch.
Emergency response teams with the Lady Lake Police Department were immediately dispatched to the scene of the car accident and quickly discovered that the 18-year-old driver, a 17-year-old passenger from Leesburg, and another 15-year-old passenger from Fruitland Park had been ejected from the vehicle during the crash. None of these individuals were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and both the 17-year-old and 18-year-old sustained fatal injuries and passed away. The 15-year-old passenger suffered critical injuries during the incident and was transported to the Ocala Regional Medical Center for additional medical treatment. Another passenger, a 16-year-old from Fruitland Park, who was wearing their seat belt during the crash, was also taken to the Ocala Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
This tragic case is still under investigation by the Lady Lake Police Department. If you have any relevant information regarding this fatal collision, please contact your local police department or the Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
