Two People Killed During Polk County Car Crash on U.S. 17-92
An investigation is currently underway by authorities in Polk County after two individuals lost their lives last Friday evening during an auto accident along U.S. 17-92.
According to preliminary collision reports from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, it was close to 9 p.m. on January 6, 2023, when 64-year-old Davenport resident Jennifer Wray was driving a BMW coupe in the northbound direction of U.S. 17-92. As she approached the upcoming intersection with Ernie Caldwell Boulevard, she attempted to make a left turn and crashed into an Infiniti FX45 SUV that was driving down the same street from the opposite direction. The impact from the accident caused the Infiniti SUV to rollover and flip onto its roof.
Local emergency response teams from Davenport worked in conjunction with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to provide assistance and arrived at the scene of the two-car crash within a matter of minutes. Rescuers were able to successfully remove 38-year-old Lakeland resident Tavarous Stokes from the passenger seat of the Infiniti SUV and he was airlifted from the site to the nearest hospital with injuries to his leg and neck.
The 38-year-old driver of the Infiniti SUV, Tyrone Jones from Haines City, as well as the 64-year-old driver of the BMW Jennifer Wray, both sustained life-ending injuries during the accident and were pronounced dead at the scene.
This stretch of U.S. 17-92 was closed for approximately four hours while investigators and accident clean-up crews cleared away pieces of debris and rubbish from the deadly collision. No further details are known at this time.
