Two Drivers Killed During a Head-On Car Crash Near the Florida Keys
According to preliminary incident reports from the authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol, two drivers sustained fatal injuries yesterday afternoon during a wrong-way collision along the 18-Mile Stretch of U.S. 1 in Monroe County.
Responding troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was close to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, when one man was driving a silver Toyota pickup truck in the southern direction of the 18-Mile Stretch of U.S. 1, which connects the Florida mainland with Key Largo. As the pickup truck approached the highway’s mile marker 124, another male driver behind the wheel of a brown Chevy sedan entered the vicinity and veered over from the northbound lane into the oncoming traffic of the southbound lane. This maneuver positioned the sedan into the direct path of the pickup truck and the two vehicles crashed into each other head-on.
Emergency responders with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office as well as members of the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of the auto accident soon after the first set of 9-1-1 calls were placed. Soon after their arrival at the crash site, they discovered that both drivers had sustained severe life-threatening injuries during the collision and had both passed away before any additional medical assistance could be administered. The identities of the victims have not yet been released to the public.
Traffic surrounding the area where the collision occurred was redirected to Card Sound Road while clean-up crews spent approximately four hours removing the sedan, the pickup truck, and any remaining debris that was left behind after the accident.
This deadly crash is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
