Two Children Killed During a Two-Car Crash on S.R. 46 in Lake County
As the Easter celebrations were in full swing over the weekend, a tragic turn of events struck a local Florida community after two small children sustained fatal injuries during a head-on collision on State Road 46 in Lake County.
According to troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol, it was approximately 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2022, when a 2011 Kia sedan carrying two adults and three children was traveling down State Road 46 close to the Seminole County line. As their vehicle approached the highway’s intersection with Bearpond Access Road, the 20-year-old male driver of the Kia made the dangerous decision to drive around another vehicle while in a no-passing zone. The young driver pulled the sedan across the double yellow lines and into oncoming traffic where they were immediately positioned in front of a pickup truck coming from the opposite direction.
Although the driver of the pickup quickly moved the truck away from the sedan onto the shoulder of the road, the driver of the Kia had the same reaction to the impending collision and attempted to swerve out of the way but instead crashed into the pickup truck head-on. The force from the impact of the accident caused the truck to roll over on the roadway, however, all five occupants were able to safely escape the vehicle and were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The individuals within the Kia sedan were not as fortunate.
Soon after Lake County emergency responders and officers with the Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the accident, they discovered that a 2-year-old and 4-year-old had suffered severe injuries during the collision and had already passed away. A 1-year-old child who was also in the Kia was medevaced to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in serious, yet stable condition. The 20-year-old driver and a 21-year-old passenger were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A large portion of State Road 46 was closed for several hours while detectives gathered crime scene evidence and cleanup crews picked up pieces of debris from the collision.
This deadly auto accident is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol and charges are expected to be filed at the conclusion of this case.
