Trailer Full of Tires Burns in Marion County Rest Stop
Numerous firefighters and first responders rushed to a rest stop in Marion County after a trailer hauling a large load of rubber tires caught fire. At the time of this writing, the reasons behind the blaze are not entirely clear. It is hoped that a full investigation from the Florida Highway Patrol will offer more by way of answers regarding this strange incident.
Thankfully, no one involved was injured in any way, and it seems as though the individual who was hauling the trailer full of tires was able to disconnect the main vehicle from the trailer and maneuver it a safe distance away from the burning trailer.
It is not known who first noticed the fire, although it seems most likely that it was the individual driving the trailer. The possibility remains, however, that this person was either asleep or inside of the rest stop when the smoke first started to pour from the pile of tires, prompting another witness to call the emergency response teams. What we do know is that the fire was first reported sometime around 4:15 on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 1st. The location of the fire, included in the initial report from the Marion County Fire Rescue teams that responded to the crash, was along I-75, close to the 345th mile marker.
When emergency response crews began rushing to the area, they saw the thick column of smoke rising above the trees near the highway. When they arrived, the fire was well underway, prompting the firefighting teams to immediately begin trying to douse the burning mess with numerous flames. It was reported that as much as two hours after the firefighters reached the scene the fire was still burning. It is not clear just when the fire was finally extinguished. Also unclear is the environmental impact that a burning load of rubber tires will have on the surrounding area’s air quality.
The reports suggested that the incident remains under investigation, with most of the interest being on just what caused the fire to start in the first place. It is not believed that any charges are currently pending in the case.
