Three Separate Accidents on I-95 Cause Major Delays
A series of auto accidents on I-95 on Thursday sent traffic to a crawl and resulted in one fatality according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The first incident occurred around 8 a.m. near the County Road 210 interchange. A pickup truck loaded with construction supplies overturned, scattering nails, screws and other tire-piercing debris across the highway. It is not known at this time what caused the truck to turn over, but crews worked quickly to clear the debris before it caused further accidents.
Two hours later and less than six miles south on I-95, another catastrophic accident occurred near the International Golf Parkway exit. Traffic suddenly began to slow down due to congestion when a tractor-trailer following a Honda CRV in the center lane could not slow down in time to stop. He rear-ended the CRV, and both vehicles left the roadway over the right shoulder. The driver of the CRV died as a result of the collision and his passenger was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.
Then, just after 12:30 p.m. another collision occurred near the State Road 16 exit on I-95, four miles north of the first collision. In this accident, five vehicles were involved when again traffic began to slow down and move to a start-and-stop pace due to congestion. Four people were taken to area hospitals with injuries, as well other several other individuals who were treated on scene.
All three of Thursday’s incidents occurred within a 10-mile stretch on I-95 near St. Augustine. Area law enforcement has referred to the area as a "hot spot" for accidents, indicating that they respond to several collisions in the area within a month’s time. Through October of last year, 534 collisions had occurred in the area. The Florida Highway Patrol notes that the areas around these exits, like any exit on the interstate, involve traffic that is merging to enter or exit the highway. A driver’s full attention is necessary, especially during period of heavy traffic, to avoid injury or damage to your vehicle. Distracted driving can have disastrous consequences in these high-risk areas.
