Over a Dozen Victims Involved in Multi-Car Crash in Melbourne
In a large multi-car pile-up accident on Saturday, November 21, 2015, more than a dozen people were injured. The accident occurred in Melbourne in the southbound lanes of I-95, around mile marker 180. Because of the size of the accident and the number of vehicles involved, all lanes of the interstate had to be closed temporarily, backing up traffic. On Saturday night, however, the right lane was able to be re-opened to normal usage.
According to Brevard County Fire Rescue officials who arrived at the scene of the crash, an astounding 8 vehicles were involved in the accident, causing harm to 16 people. Four of the victims were hospitalized for their injuries, but no additional details were provided regarding their medical status or their identities. It is also currently unknown what the exact cause of the multi-car crash may have been, or whether things like careless driving, excessive speed, alcohol or poor weather may have played a role. Florida Highway Patrol officials are still in the process of investigating the incident.
Further complicating the traffic situation in the Melbourne area on Saturday night, a second, separate crash occurred on I-95 southbound around mile marker 179 – just a mile away from the 8-car incident. Due to this second accident – which unfortunately injured 5 other individuals – authorities were forced to close all southbound lanes of the highway, leaving traffic backed up to about U.S. 192 for some time before a detour could be employed to get things moving again.
