Orlando Pickup Truck Accident Leaves One Dead, Two Injured
A fatal crash in Orlando remains under investigation after a car collided with a stopped pickup pulling an attached trailer on the northbound lanes of Chickasaw Trail. Reports on the incident come from members of the Florida Highway Patrol working within Orange County who responded to the initial reports of the accident and were among the first emergency workers at the scene.
After conducting a preliminary investigation, the Florida Highway Patrol issued a statement on the crash, its causes, and its aftermath. This statement describes how on the morning of Monday, January 4th, a pickup truck was traveling down the northern lanes of Chickasaw Trail when something caused the driver of the truck to deem it necessary to stop and examine the trailer. The driver pulled slightly off of the road close to Scarborough Court and the Liberty Middle School located in Orlando. For reasons that are not clear, it appears as though the driver failed to pull fully off of the roadway, meaning that a portion of the trailer remained projected into the northbound lanes.
Inside of the vehicle were two individuals, and after the driver pulled the pickup off the road and stopped it, both of these people exited the truck and began to examine the trailer. At this time, a Nissan Altima, also traveling down the northern lanes of Chickasaw Trail, approached the area. It remains unclear exactly why, but the driver of the Nissan apparently failed to notice the stopped trailer and pickup; at least, they failed to notice that the rear of the pickup projected as far as it did into the travel lane.
When the front of the Nissan struck the rear of the trailer, it caused the trailer to lurch violently to the side, striking both the people who were now on foot beside it. Both of these individuals suffered from severe injuries as result of being struck by the Nissan. The driver of the Nissan also suffered from severe injuries as a result of the crash. All three individuals were taken from the scene by emergency medical personnel and transported to nearby hospitals. When they arrived, one of the people from the pickup truck, a 29-year-old Orlando resident, was declared dead as a result of their injuries.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
