Nine Auto Accidents on Florida I-4 Friday Night
A rash of accidents on Friday night had the Florida Highway Patrol extremely busy. A total of nine accidents, four in the westbound lanes and five in the eastbound lanes, had traffic moving slow in both directions on I-4 across the middle of the state. According to officials, twenty-six vehicles were involving in these incidents which occurred in the evening hours between milepost 121 and 127. Most of the incidents were rear-end collisions. It is unclear at this point whether all of the incidents were related.
For all these accidents, only three individuals were sent to area hospitals, each with non-life threatening injuries. Every year thousands of motorists are involving in vehicle collisions along Florida’s highways and interstates, and hundreds of people are seriously injured. Though most of Friday’s injuries were very minor, these motorists should count themselves lucky. Motor vehicle accidents are among the top causes of death for Americans.
Any number of factors can contribute to a motor vehicle accident. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicle’s website lists the number one factor in vehicle accidents as careless driving. Usually, this means that the driver was not paying attention to road conditions, traffic, corners, or other aspects of the physical landscape. But we live in a world where these are not the only distractions drivers face. Cell phones, text messages, even other vehicle occupants can present a real issue, especially for inexperienced drivers. The consequences for failing to pay attention can be deadly.
The year in Florida only, there have been 31 motor vehicle related fatalities. Hundreds more have been seriously injured. These injuries affect not only the lives of the victims, but also their families. Severe injuries can mean job loss or skyrocketing medical costs. The physical and mental toll can be overwhelming for the victims.
