Moped Driver Dies After Collision in Melbourne
Police officers within the city of Melbourne are involved in an investigation into an accident that took place during the night of Tuesday, November 10th, and resulted in the death of a 62-year-old woman. The woman, a Melbourne resident, was driving her moped down East University Boulevard shortly before the incident took place.
According to the reports, the 62-year-old was alone on the moped at the time of the crash. It is believed that they were traveling down a different road when they reached the intersection of East University and this other road. The 62-year-old then entered the eastern lanes of East University Boulevard.
Witnesses told the authorities that at the point where the woman entered East University Boulevard there was already a fair amount of traffic. We are currently awaiting updates from the police regarding whether or not the 62-year-old paused before merging into the lanes or if they simply sped into the busier street without taking adequate precautions. Regardless of how the moped rider handled the situation, at the time they entered East University Boulevard, there was another vehicle that was traveling down the left lanes of this same street and attempting to make a left turn into a parking lot located across the street.
The reports suggested that the moped rider drove directly into the path of the car as it was making the turn, an event which caused the car to strike the moped and its ride with considerable force. The 62-year-old was thrown from their vehicle and onto the ground, further inflicting injuries upon them.
The reports did not immediately state if the 62-year-old was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but we do know that they were alive when paramedics reached the scene. EMTs and other emergency medical personnel treated the woman at the site as best as they could before transporting her via ambulance to Holmes Regional Medical Center. After reaching this larger medical facility, the 62-year-old began receiving treatment from the emergency doctors on staff. Unfortunately, the severity of her injuries was far too great and she was declared dead sometime after arriving.
The incident remains under investigation. Police have ruled out both alcohol and drugs as contributing factors to the crash.
