Jacksonville Driver Dies in Early Morning Semi-Truck Collision
Florida Highway Patrol officers working within Volusia County have recently released additional crash details surrounding a fatal auto accident involving a semi-truck that occurred a little over two weeks ago. On Thursday, June 18th, 2020, troopers responded to emergency calls of a serious big-rig collision along the shoulder of Interstate 95, in which two individuals had been injured, one fatally.
According to records, a 23-year-old Jacksonville man was driving his 2000 Honda sedan northbound on I-95 at approximately two o’clock in the morning when his vehicle unexpectedly suffered a puncture in one of its tires. It was at this same time that the driver noticed a roadside assistance vehicle attempting to fix a disabled FedEx truck that was having problems of its own. Hoping to get some help, the Honda driver pulled over as well and asked the service worker if they could take a look at his deflating tire whenever he was finished. After a quick car conversation, it was agreed upon that the driver would proceed to a gas station located at the next interstate exit and the worker would meet him there when he was done with the FedEx hauler.
After switching on his flashing hazard lights, the driver of the Honda began his route to the gas station in the right-hand lane of the interstate. Unfortunately, a large truck carrying Amazon packages was also in this same path, but at a much higher rate of speed. Investigators indicate that the driver of the truck swerved to avoid the rear-end collision, but his actions proved to be futile and he crashed into the back of the sedan. Both men were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident, however, the young man driving the Honda sustained serious injuries that he was unable to recover from and he passed away at the scene. Additionally, the impact of the collision caused almost 200 gallons of diesel fuel from the semi-truck to spill onto the roadway.
