Head-On Crash on CR-491 Kills Mount Dora Woman
State troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol are looking into an auto accident that took place within Citrus County and resulted in the death of a woman believed to be a resident of Mount Dora. What we know at the time of this writing begins at around 5:00 in the evening on Wednesday, July 15th. At this time, many people were traveling throughout the roads within Citrus County, although it is two primarily that concern us. The first was a 40-year-old man who was traveling down the southern lanes of County Road 491, close to the intersection of CR-491 and West Glen Pines Court. The second was a 61-year-old woman who was driving down the northern lanes of the same road.
It is possible that there were other drivers traveling down both the northern and southern lanes of County Road 491 at this same time, however the reports in question only mentioned these two individuals, making the actions of the 40-year-old driver something of a mystery.
As the vehicle being driven by the 40-year-old and the vehicle being driven by the 61-year-old neared one another, the 40-year-old suddenly left the southbound lanes of CR-491 and entered the northbound lanes. They did this without changing direction so that they were now traveling the wrong direction down the highway as they sped against traffic.
The 61-year-old woman who was traveling down the northern lanes at this time was not able to avoid the 40-year-old driver’s vehicle, and the two cars collided head-on with a considerable amount of force. Because the velocity of a head-on collision equals the speed of both cars combined, they are frequently far more severe and deadly than any other type of crash. The incident that took place on Wednesday is no exception to this general rule, meaning that despite both of the drivers being buckled into their vehicles, they both still suffered from severe bodily trauma as a result of the crash.
While the condition of the 40-year-old remains unknown, we do know that the 61-year-old was severely injured as a result of the collision. Despite the best efforts of the emergency response teams that arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, the 61-year-old was declared dead at the scene.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident.
