Florida Man Killed in Accident on State Road 84
An accident just after noon on Thursday has left one Fort Lauderdale man dead. Terrence M. Sosenko, a 60-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, was on his mobility scooter and attempting to cross State Road 84 when he was struck by the rear wheels of a commercial beverage truck, driven by Farrell E. Jackson, 43, of Miami. Mr. Sosenko was in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. Although police have not charged the driver of the truck at this time, the investigation is ongoing. Police have obtained surveillance video from businesses in the area and interviewed several witnesses. Traffic was shut down for several hours eastbound on State Road 84 due to the accident.
Yesterday’s accident is a tragic event, by anyone’s account. Although there are few specific details released at this time, one fact is clear – that this accident occurred at a busy intersection. There are thousands of intersections in Florida that fit the same profile, two busy streets crossing, with many businesses located nearby and a lot of foot traffic. With hundreds of cars passing by and several pedestrians and cyclists navigating them every day, it is a wonder that we do not have more incidents such as the one that occurred yesterday. Clearly, with all of the traffic and congestion, it is imperative that all parties stay alert and aware of their surroundings, especially when approaching intersections.
It is a fact of daily life that often we forget to pay attention to cues in our environments when our minds are full of outside thoughts, whether we are driving a car or walking down the street. Staying focusing and paying attention to the actions of others, especially when operating a vehicle, is the best way to keep yourself and others around you safe. Limiting distractions while driving, such as cell phones, eating or even listening to a loud radio can increase your odds of noticing and reacting to a potentially dangerous situation. Pedestrians and cyclists should never listen to loud music on headphones and should stop to talk phone calls or texts. By taking small steps to increase our safe behaviors, we can hopefully prevent accidents and save lives.
