Five People Injured after High-Speed Chase in Orange County
On Friday, August 24th, police officers working with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of burglaries happening within a residential area inside of Orange County. When deputies reached the area, sometime around 3:30 in the morning, they quickly located the car believed to be carrying those committing the robberies. The car itself had also been reported as stolen sometime earlier in the morning, although it is not clear if this theft was what precipitated the police response of if they were indeed at the scene in response to the domestic break-ins.
When the deputies identified the vehicle as the one which they were on site to apprehend, they activated the lights on the cruisers and began to try and stop the vehicle using the traditional methods. Unfortunately, the individuals within the car were not keen on being arrested by the police and decided to engage in somewhat drastic measures in order to evade capture. The driver of the car stepped on the gas and plowed the vehicle into one of the responding cruisers, an action which resulted in the deputy within the vehicle suffering from injuries.
After this, the driver of the stolen car fled the scene, closely followed by numerous deputies. A short time later, the entire group approached a red light, something which the stolen car’s driver decided to ignore. Speeding through the light, the driver of the car perhaps thought that they would manage to be free just on the other side, but their trajectory was interrupted by a vehicle being driven by a civilian, and the following collision caused yet another person, this time a 55-year-old individual from Clermont, to require medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
Police were then able to arrest the driver of the car and their two companions, all of whom were brought to nearby hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
At the time of this writing it is not clear how the charges relating to this case will proceed, and no updates on the conditions of those involved was released after the initial news report describing the incidents and their aftermath.
