Elderly People Severely Injured by Car in Volusia County Parking Lot

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on August 20, 2018

A spokesperson for the city of Ormond Beach recently released a statement concerning an auto accident that took place on the morning of Friday, August 17th, in the parking lot of a Volusia County Big Lots. This initial report included the details that two individuals, neither of whom were named, were struck by a single car and that both of these people suffered from serious injuries as a result.

It was close to noon, around 11:50 in the morning, when two elderly individuals were walking through the Big Lots parking area. It is not known if these people had left the store, if they were on their way into the store, or if they were simply spending time in the parking area for other reasons. Regardless, a third elderly person came driving through the area in their car. It is not clear if this third person saw the other two and believed they were further from their vehicle than they were or if they simply failed to notice the two pedestrians.

The driver of the car struck both of the other people, inflicting severe injuries upon them in the process. The report indicated that the two suffered from broken bones, head injuries, and other bodily trauma as a result of the crash.

After hitting the two people, the driver of the car fled the area. Later, they came back to the scene of the incident and handed themselves over to the police. When asked for the reasons behind their departure from the scene, this person told the police that it was because they were scared after hitting the two pedestrians.

The current condition of the two people struck by the car is not known at this time. Given the level of damage they suffered as a result of the collision, and given that they were older, it is likely that the consequences of their injuries will be far greater than if they were younger.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police will add information as it becomes available. It is not known if any charges are currently being filed against the driver of the vehicle.
