DUI Suspect Crashes Into FHP Trooper in Pasco County
A trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol was transported to the hospital over the weekend after he was involved in a wrong-way crash with a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 75 in Pasco County.
Preliminary auto accident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was approximately 2:40 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, when 23-year-old Zephyrhills resident Adonis Francisco Adames was driving a red 2021 Toyota Camry in the northbound direction of the southern lanes along Interstate 75 by Wesley Chapel.
As the young driver approached mile marker 50 close to State Road 56, a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol responding to the incident positioned their department-issued vehicle in the direct path of the oncoming Camry. Adonis Francisco Adames did not stop for the upcoming police cruiser and crashed into the passenger’s side of the car. Dashcam footage from the trooper’s vehicle shows that after the initial collision occurred, Adames backed up the Toyota Camry and then tried to drive forward again before the injured trooper instructed him to turn off his car.
The Florida Highway Patrol trooper was taken to the closest hospital and received treatment for minor injuries.
The driver of the Toyota Camry was unharmed, however, responding officers administered routine field sobriety tests at the scene of the accident and Adames registered a 0.148 breath sample – almost twice the legal limit in the state of Florida. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and driving in the wrong direction.
Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol stated that Adames started this wrong-way trip roughly thirteen miles away near the interchange of Busch Boulevard and I-275 in Tampa. The chain of events leading up to this collision are unclear at this time. This investigation is ongoing.
