Driver Killed During Collision with Dump Truck in Lehigh Acres
According to preliminary reports from the Florida Highway Patrol working within Lee County, one person was killed and another was injured during an accident with a dump truck last Friday evening along Hanna Avenue in Lehigh Acres.
Initial details from the Florida Highway Patrol surrounding the auto accident indicate that it was shortly before 6:30 p.m. on April 14, 2023, when an 88-year-old female driver and her 11-year-old female passenger, both from Lehigh Acres, were traveling in the northbound direction of Hanna Avenue in a sedan-style vehicle.
As the pair approached the street’s intersection with Lee Boulevard, a 47-year-old man in a dump truck entered the area driving eastbound on Lee Boulevard. For reasons that are currently unknown, the 88-year-old driver proceeded to drive through the intersection when it was not her turn and this positioned her vehicle in the direct path of the oncoming dump truck. Neither individual could avoid a collision and the dump truck struck the driver’s side of the sedan.
Two off-duty good samaritans, a Florida Highway Patrol officer and an ICU nurse, were the first two people to arrive at the scene of the deadly collision. They performed CPR on the critically-injured 11-year-old sedan passenger until emergency responders took over and transported her to a local hospital. She is said to be in stable condition at the time of this writing.
Sadly, the 88-year-old woman sustained severe injuries during the accident and died at the crash site.
The 47-year-old dump truck driver, also from Lehigh Acres, was unharmed.
Although this case is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, there are several factors that could have played a role in this fatal auto accident, including a medical issue with the 88-year-old driver, poor driving conditions due to inclement weather, or a possible mechanical malfunction with her own vehicle. Regardless of the outcome, our thoughts are with her family and friends.
