Deltona Man Killed in Car Crash While Saving His Injured Dog
Authorities with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are currently investigating a fatal auto accident which killed a 55-year-old man in front of his house along Courtland Boulevard in Deltona this past Friday evening. Preliminary reports indicate that the homeowner was standing in the street tending to his dog who had been run over by a different vehicle when he was struck by an oncoming Toyota sedan.
It was shortly before 11 p.m. on November 27th, 2020, when dispatchers with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office were first alerted to a potentially deadly collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle at the 400 block of Courtland Boulevard. According to officers and witness statements retrieved at the scene, Deltona resident 55-year-old Craig Alan Richards was standing in the roadway in front of his home along the northbound lane of Courtland Blvd. and was attempting to help his dog who had just been hit by a car. As the man was bent over his beloved pet, a four-door Toyota sedan crashed into him. Emergency responders employed life-saving medical measures to the accident victim upon their arrival, however, due to the severe nature of his injuries, Mr. Richards sadly passed away before he could be transported to a local hospital. The dog also did not survive.
The driver of the Toyota was unharmed in the collision and remained at the scene after the accident. Officers stated that there were no signs of intoxication or impairment from the driver and that he fully cooperated with officials during their questioning.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit will continue to investigate this tragic wrongful death accident in order to uncover exactly what occurred in the moments leading up to the collision. “Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers,” they said while expressing their condolences on social media.
