Orlando Personal Injury Attorney - Part 5
Orlando Planning Miles of Sidewalks to Prevent Pedestrian Accidents
Orlando officials are planning an additional 18 miles of sidewalks for city streets in an ambitious project scheduled to get underway this year. The additional miles of sidewalk are more than four times what they originally planned, and city officials are going to add even more miles of sidewalks after this part of the plan is complete. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham fully supports this and any other plans to reduce pedestrian accidents and make Orlando a safer place for people who walk, bike and jog on area roadways. He has been a strong advocate for making area streets and highways safer for everyone and supports any measure that prevents accidents.
Massive 1-4 Tour Bus Fire Attracts Gawkers, Creates Dangerous Situation
A spectacular tour bus fire on Interstate 4 recently snarled traffic for hours, and gawkers slowing down for a better view as well as those who stopped for a better look created a very dangerous situation. The tour bus was parked on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes when the fire began around noon on Sunday, April 18. Observers said that smoke from the fire could be seen for miles until firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames shortly thereafter. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham cautions drivers that slowing down to get a better view of an accident scene is reckless and creates a potentially dangerous distracted driving situation.
Ford Expands F-150 Airbag Recall
Ford Motor Company expanded a recall involving their F-150 trucks recently, following recommendations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Ford’s F-150 pickup truck has been the best-selling vehicle in North America for the last 34 years, but recent airbag problems have prompted the automaker to expand the original recall. Initially, Ford recalled 144,000 F-150s, but the recall now affects more than 1.32 million trucks manufactured between 2004 and 2006 for problems involving accidental airbag deployment.
Orlando Bus Accident Injures Six Students
Six students went to an Orlando area hospital for treatment for injuries they received when a van rear-ended the school bus they were riding on April 6. Accident investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the accident occurred on John Young Parkway near the Sand Lake intersection. Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham is monitoring developments in this case very closely. He hopes the kids are all on the mend and expects the FHP to release more details about the case in the coming days and weeks.
Lawmakers Push for Motorcoach Enhanced Safety Act
Several recent high-profile bus accidents, including one in New York in March that killed 15 people and injured 17 more, has prompted lawmakers from Ohio and Texas to press other members of Congress to pass the Motorcoach Enhanced Safety Act. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) spoke before fellow lawmakers recently and urged them to pass the Act, which would improve driver training and motorcoach safety. The Act was first proposed in 2007 after a bus accident in Atlanta that killed five members of the Bluffton University baseball team.
Conductor in Fatal Amusement Park Accident Admitted Going Too Fast
The conductor of the train involved in a fatal amusement park accident admitted to a police officer that the train was going too fast at the time of the accident. The accident claimed the life of a six-year-old boy in Spartanburg, SC, and it caused 19 people to go to area hospitals for treatment for their injuries. Mr. Conrad, the conductor of the train, told police “he knew better than to drive the train that fast.”
Orlando Personal Injury Lawyer Monitoring Mazda Fuel System Recall
Many automakers have come under fire in recent years due to safety defects, but the latest recall involving Mazda cars is something no automotive designer or manufacturer could have anticipated. Mazda has announced a recall for thousands of its vehicles because of a fuel line problem that could result in potentially dangerous cracks and leaks. The recall involves a spider species and its fondness for the smell of gasoline. The Yellow Sac spider, a species common here in the U.S., likes the smell of gasoline so much that it builds its webs in the emission systems of automobiles. The design of the fuel system in Mazda6 vehicles allows these gas-loving spiders to crawl in and build webs, which can lead to a restriction in the vent line that can cause the emission control system to increase pressure in the fuel tank.
Orlando Personal Injury Attorney Warns Floridians About Auto Accident Fraud
Florida law enforcement agencies are working with government agencies and consumer advocate groups to raise awareness about a serious and growing problem in our state. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham would like his readers to know that Florida drivers are paying up to $100 more each year for insurance coverage due to criminal groups that stage auto accidents to defraud insurance companies. That number is expected to increase in the coming months and years.
Boy Airlifted After Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
Law enforcement officials are looking for a green Nissan pickup truck that witnesses saw flee the scene of a bicycle accident that sent a five-year-old boy to the hospital with critical injuries. Bradenton Police say the accident occurred around 7:30 on the evening of March 12 in the 2200 block of Fifth Avenue Drive East. Lt. Bryan Fowler of the Bradenton Police Department said, “The boy was riding his bike in the road when the pickup heading southbound on 22nd Street hit him.” Anyone who witnessed or knows anything about the accident is requested to call the Bradenton Police Department 941-932-9301 or call Crime Stoppers at 866-634-8477.
Orlando Personal Injury Lawyer Supports Raising Driving Age in Florid
Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham is following developments in a bill that would cause our state’s youngest and least experienced drivers to wait until they turn 17 to receive a driver’s license. State Representative Irving Slosbert of Boca Raton (D) is sponsoring a bill currently working through committees that would raise the legal driving age to 17 in the hope that another year of experience and maturity will make Florida streets and highways safer. However, at least one Florida driving instructor is skeptical of the proposed law. Tony DiStefano has 15 years of experience teaching young drivers at Safer Dixie Driving School in Largo. He says that education, not age, should be the focus to make streets and highways safer.
