Orlando Planning Miles of Sidewalks to Prevent Pedestrian Accidents
Orlando officials are planning an additional 18 miles of sidewalks for city streets in an ambitious project scheduled to get underway this year. The additional miles of sidewalk are more than four times what they originally planned, and city officials are going to add even more miles of sidewalks after this part of the plan is complete. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham fully supports this and any other plans to reduce pedestrian accidents and make Orlando a safer place for people who walk, bike and jog on area roadways. He has been a strong advocate for making area streets and highways safer for everyone and supports any measure that prevents accidents.
“It’s a huge shot in the arm for our sidewalk program,” Mayor Buddy Dyer said. “Being able to do roughly four times what we do in a year certainly allows us to move our program forward. One of the things we talk about a lot is public safety, and you generally think of the Police Department, but sidewalks play an instrumental role in public safety as well.”
The sidewalk construction is largely funded by $54 million in federal funds that will be released over the next 24 months. Without the funds, the plans would not be able to move forward given Orlando’s plummeting tax revenue over the last three years. The sidewalks address a dangerous and long-standing problem in our city; hundreds of miles of Orlando streets lack sidewalks. City officials are prioritizing where the sidewalks will be built first, and they are planning to initially break ground on streets near pedestrian networks. The city will begin accepting construction bids soon, and construction is expected to begin in the fall.
Florida leads the nation in pedestrian accidents each year, and Orlando is an especially dangerous place for people who walk, bike and jog. While the new sidewalks are great news for Orlando area residents and visitors alike, much remains to be done to make our roadways safer.
