ATV Accident Sends Teens to Orlando Hospitals
Three area teens were injured recently in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Brevard County. Accident investigators say that the teens were riding together on Hammock Road in Mims around 6 p.m. one recent evening when one of the ATVs clipped the back of another, causing a third to collide with one of the ATVs. The accident involved four teens, with one of the teens riding on the back of one of the three ATVs. The three injured teens were airlifted to two Orlando hospitals, where one is listed in critical condition, another is listed in serious condition and a third was treated for minor injuries. Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham is monitoring developments in this case closely, as this is one of several recent accidents involving ATVs that resulted in severe injuries to young people. Police say that one of the ATVs ran over at least two of the teens, resulting in the serious injuries.
Rob Seccuro of Brevard County Fire Rescue said that it was quite rare for three emergency helicopters to be called to the same accident scene. He said, “All were what we call trauma or strict criteria. We launched three helicopters from Orlando and they all came and picked up our patients. I mean, in my 23 years of being in Brevard County we’ve landed three helicopters twice that I know of.”
Police say that all three drivers received tickets for illegally driving on a public road, and two of the drivers also received citations for careless driving.
All-terrain vehicles are fun to drive, but they can also cause severe, even fatal, injuries. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, around 500 people across the country are killed in ATV accidents every year, and thousands more are injured. Many of the design features that make these vehicles so much fun to drive also make them prone to rollovers, which cause crushing injuries that lead to the following:
- Limb amputations
- Severe head trauma
- Paralysis
- Lacerated internal organs
- Other debilitating injuries that change accident victims’ lives forever
