Johnson & Johnson Recalls Popular Aveeno and Neutrogena Sunscreens
In yet another devastating blow to pharmaceutical titan Johnson & Johnson, the company was forced to recall five of its popular sunscreen products Wednesday morning due to trace amounts of benzene – a well-known carcinogenic chemical which has the potential to cause cancer after prolonged usage.
According to a press release from Johnson & Johnson on July 14, 2021, the consumer goods giant said “benzene is not an ingredient in its products,” and they issued the voluntary recall “out of an abundance of caution.” The affected aerosol sunscreen products include:
- Aveeno Protect + Refresh
- Neutrogena Beach Defense
- Neutrogena CoolDry Sport
- Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense
- Neutrogena UltraSheer
Consumers have been asked to properly dispose of their recalled sunscreen products and to contact Johnson & Johnson’s Consumer Care Center with questions or to request a refund by calling (800) 458-1673. Distributors and retailers from around the country have already been advised of the recall, and are working diligently to remove the remainder of the tainted products from store shelves.
Talcum Powder Lawsuits
This isn’t the first time that Johnson & Johnson has found themselves in the hot seat, as the company has faced years of litigation stemming from allegations and court settlements over the amount of asbestos in their talcum-based products, the company’s cover-up, and the subsequent deaths of multiple individuals after they were diagnosed with life-altering cancers and diseases after extensive use of J&J’s iconic line of baby powders. “They could have protected customers by switching from talc to cornstarch, as their own scientists proposed as early as 1973. But talc was cheaper and petitioners were unwilling to sacrifice profits for a safer product,” stated Ken Starr, one of the many prosecuting attorneys representing the women who filed lawsuits against the company over the years.
