Vacationing Couple Struck in Daytona Beach Shores Pedestrian Accident
A Georgia woman was killed and her husband injured when they were struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street to have dinner at a nearby restaurant in Daytona Beach Shores. The investigation into the fatal pedestrian accident is still underway, but police say that the 67-year-old victim and her 62-year-old husband were a Woodstock, Georgia, couple vacationing in the area. Police say the couple was crossing Atlantic Avenue around 12:10 p.m. when they were struck by a Ford ranger driven by a 64-year-old Daytona Beach Shores man.
The driver had just turned left onto Atlantic Avenue from Atares Avenue when he struck the couple. The woman died from her injuries at the scene of the accident, and her husband was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center with undisclosed injuries that were described as not life-threatening. Police closed both northbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue for two hours while they conducted their investigation.
Regular readers of this blog and Florida newspapers know all too well that Florida leads the nation each year in numbers of people injured and killed in pedestrian accidents. The causes of these accidents have been well documented and include the following:
- A strong car culture and transportation infrastructure designed and built to accommodate automobiles instead of pedestrian and bicycle traffic
- Large, multi-lane intersections that are difficult to cross
- Drivers who run red lights
- Drivers distracted by cell phones, eating, shaving, reaching for an object on the floor, applying makeup, etc.
- Drivers who operate their vehicles at excessive speeds
- Drivers operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Most of the causes listed above involve negligence on the part of drivers or municipalities that fail to correct intersections that they know are dangerous to non-motorized traffic. If you or a close family member has been struck and injured in a pedestrian accident, you may be entitled to seek damages against the at-fault party.
