Satellite Beach Crash Kills 82-Year-Old Pedestrian
A car crash in Satellite Beach this past Friday, November 2nd, resulted in the death of one individual. According to officers with the Satellite Beach Police Department, the incident took place shortly before 7:30 in the evening. The car involved, which was not described in the initial report, was being driven down State Road A1A by an individual who was not named. At this same time, an 82-year-old resident of Merritt Island was standing at the intersection of State Road A1A and Roosevelt Avenue, planning on crossing the busy intersection to reach the home of a relative.
It is not clear if the 82-year-old pedestrian was standing at a crosswalk or if the intersection features any pedestrian protective zones at all. If a crosswalk was present at the intersection, it is not clear if the walk signal was illuminated for the pedestrian or if the sign was instructing them to wait a while longer until it was safe. Likewise, it is not known if the driver of the car was facing a green or red light or if perhaps it is a stop sign that gives orders at this particular intersection.
Regardless of the answer to these questions, the pedestrian stepped off of the curb and began to try and walk across the street at the same time that the driver of the car was trying to pass through the same place. The car struck the pedestrian and inflicted severe injuries upon them. Paramedics and EMTs were called to the scene, and when they arrived they immediately began to administer emergency medical care to the pedestrian. The pedestrian was then taken via ambulance to a nearby hospital where, despite the work of the medical staff, they were ultimately declared dead.
The report indicated that the driver of the car involved remained at the scene of the accident after the collision and that they remain fully cooperative with the investigative team as the incident is examined from all possible angles. As of this time, no charges are pending, although this could change as the investigation — spearheaded by the Florida Highway Patrol — moves forward.
