Pedestrian Walking Along Old Tampa Highway Struck and Killed
A fatal pedestrian crash was reported within the City of Kissimmee during the beginning of August. According to the press release on the incident made by the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash involved one pedestrian and one car. No other vehicles or pedestrians are believed to have been in the roadway or in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
A preliminary investigation has discovered that the pedestrian was a 33-year-old Kissimmee resident who was walking down Old Tampa Highway. Similar to many highways, Old Tampa Highway was not built for pedestrians, meaning that the individual in question was walking along a heavily trafficked road shortly before the fatal encounter took place.
We know that it was sometime after 2:30 in the morning on Wednesday, August 5th, when a 29-year-old Orlando resident was behind the wheel of a car traveling down the eastern lanes of Old Tampa Highway. According to the reports, the pedestrian was also walking down the eastern lanes at the time of the accident. The statements from the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that it seemed extremely likely that the pedestrian was walking inside of the travel lane at the time of the accident.
The 29-year-old Orlando resident is believed to have been alone in their car at the time of the accident. Although it is not known where the driver was coming from, there is currently no information to suggest that the man was intoxicated or otherwise too impaired to drive. It is not clear if the pedestrian has also been declared free of any influencing substances at the time of the incident.
First responders to the accident were told by the driver of the car that they did not see the pedestrian in the moments leading up to the crash. According to this individual, it was only after the collision between the car and the pedestrian that they noticed the person on foot.
The collision caused the pedestrian to suffer from severe injuries and when the paramedics and EMTs reached the area they attempted to offer as much emergency aid as possible in order to keep the man alive. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to save the person and they were declared dead at the scene.
