Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Orange County Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on October 9, 2020

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to an incident in Orange County that happened early in the morning of Tuesday, October 6th, and resulted in the death of a 64-year-old DeBary resident. Reports from the FHP indicated that the accident happened shortly after 6:00 in the morning, as the 64-year-old was walking along Goldenrod Road, close to where this road intersects with Colonial Drive.

While the information has yet to be confirmed, the initial reports from the Florida Highway Patrol stated that the 64-year-old was not in a crosswalk at the time of the incident, and that they were instead crossing a portion of the road that does not possess any noticeable pedestrian safety features. It remains unclear if the intersection of Colonial Drive and Goldenrod Road features any pedestrian safety zones or if the entire stretch of road through this area is without such things as crosswalks or flashing lights for pedestrians.

The 64-year-old was walking near to the roadway when they decided to try and cross from one side of Goldenrod Road to the other. This decision took them from the safety of the shoulder or sidewalk and into the dangerous and unprotected area of the roadway itself. At the same time, a 46-year-old Celebration resident was behind the wheel of an SUV and traveling down the northern lanes of Goldenrod when they approached the same area where the 64-year-old was walking.

The driver of the SUV either failed to notice the pedestrian or otherwise believed that they were far enough away from the person for it to really be a point of concern. Given how early the accident took place, and given the fact that the pedestrian was not on a sidewalk, it is extremely likely that the driver of the SUV was not able to notice the pedestrian in the moments leading up to the crash.

The force of the car accident resulted in the pedestrian suffering from extremely severe injuries. When the paramedics and EMTs reached the scene, they rushed him from the area to AdventHealth East, where, despite the best efforts of the doctors, he died.

The driver of the SUV was not injured and cooperated with the authorities during the preliminary investigation.
