Orlando Community Mourns Death of Girl Struck by Car
A little over a week ago, on Sunday, March 18th, police with the Orange County Police Department responded with other emergency rescue teams from Orlando and Orange County to reports of a accident involving a pedestrian and a car along Silver Star Road. The official report from the police indicates that at close to 5:45 in the evening, a 19-year-old individual driving a Mercury Cougar was traveling down Silver Star Road, nearing the place where this road intersects with Dardanelle Drive, when an 8-year-old child ran into the street directly in front of them. The driver attempted to stop in time, but was unable to respond quickly enough to prevent the car from striking the young girl.
The driver of the car stopped, and either they or another witness to the incident called 9-1-1. When the paramedics and police arrived, the badly injured girl was taken via ambulance to Arnold Palmer Hospital. The report indicated that the injuries she suffered in the incident were too extreme for her to overcome, and she was declared dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Several days later, the community of people mourning the young girl’s death came together in the median of Silver Star Road to remember her and issue a strong reminder to drivers passing through the area to slow down and pay attention.
While the reasons behind the collision between the Mercury and the girl were not fully explicated in the initial report, the residents of this particular area of Orlando say that drivers traveling through this area repeatedly ignore speed limit signs, talk on their cell phones, and generally fail to pay proper attention to their surroundings. The crowd of over 100 people were gathered to send the message to drivers that the residential area was home to dozens of people, many of them children, and drivers who fail to recognize this fact run the risk of causing a fatal accident.
Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Transportation has indicated that it will be conducting an investigation into the crash with the intention of deciding upon measures that will help increase the safety of the area.
