One Person Injured in Winter Garden Thanksgiving Celebration

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 2, 2014

The annual Thanksgiving Celebration in a Winter Garden neighborhood is a tradition for hundreds of Orlando area residents. But this year’s celebration ended in chaos, after someone opened fire when police officers arrived to investigate a possible pedestrian accident around 1 a.m. Friday.

Officials from the Sheriff’s office report that deputies had been dispatched after an emergency call was placed by a woman who stated she had been hit by an automobile. Officers arrived on the scene and were trying to locate the victim, when they were heard shots fired and took cover. None of the deputies were injured, but there were bullet holes in the driver’s side door of the police cruiser they had parked nearby. It is not clear at this time if the officers were the intended target or if the shots were aimed at someone else attending the festivities.

As the officers attempted get party-goers to safety and look for the shooter, another emergency call came in that someone had been hit in the gunfire. The unidentified victim was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Several other units were dispatched to the Winter Garden area to maintain order as several party attendees were fleeing to avoid further injury.

The holiday season is now in full swing and holiday festivities and gatherings are a large part of many Florida residents’ holiday plans. Unfortunately, sometimes these fun events end in violence whether it is an argument that turns physical, or a situation that turns deadly as in the case of Friday’s shooting. Florida Law Enforcement reminds everyone that the best way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe is to stay in control, not to over indulge in alcohol and always be aware of your surroundings and alert to any possibly dangerous situations.
