DeBary Man Faces Charges in Connection with Fatal DUI Pedestrian Accident
Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that a 43-year-old DeBary man is facing multiple charges in connection with a recent fatal DUI pedestrian accident. Troopers say that the driver was drunk when his vehicle struck and killed a 20-year-old man on State Road 46. They report that the suspect was traveling east on S.R. 46 near Wekiva River Road when he struck the victim, who was standing in the eastbound lane. Investigators have not yet determined why the victim was standing in the road at the time of the accident but report that the impact threw the victim into the median.
One of the victim’s friends told investigators that he was walking to the Wekiva River to meet friends when the accident occurred. When she learned that her friend had been struck and killed by a drunk driver, she issued a harsh but accurate summary of the negligence of drunk drivers.
“Not only could they kill themselves, but they could kill other people who are completely innocent and have their entire lives in front of them,” she said.
According to statistics compiled by the Florida Department of Highway Safety, 69 drivers were charged with DUI manslaughter in 2013. It is important to remember that hundreds more Florida drivers faced charges in connection with DUI accidents that injured people that year and every year on Florida roadways. Despite increasingly tougher criminal penalties and public awareness campaigns about the dangers of drinking and driving, many Floridians continue to put others at risk for death and serious injury by driving drunk. An even more disturbing and astonishing DUI statistic is that traffic safety experts estimate that a drunk driver drives while legally drunk around 87 times before they are caught.
