Organizers Expect 250,000 Visitors for This Year’s Bike Fest in Leesburg
Organizers of this year’s Bike Fest in Leesburg are expecting around 250,000 bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts at the yearly event, or around ten times the city’s population. The 17th annual Bike Fest is the single-largest event in Lake County each year and brings much-needed revenue to local merchants hit hard by the sluggish economy. Bike Fest is considered more family-friendly than Daytona Bike Week and other Florida motorcycle events are and offers live music, food, vendors and activities for kids. The event is scheduled for the weekend of April 26-28 and draws additional law enforcement personnel, as well as visitors. All of Leesburg’s police officers will be on duty for the event, and an additional 15 deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office will be on patrol for drunken drivers and riders and disorderly behavior.
Motorcycle accident lawyers would like to remind readers and anyone attending Bike Fest to exercise extra care when traveling around the area. Hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists will be sharing Central Florida roadways that weekend, and there is always a sharp increase in motorcycle accidents during Bike Fest and other motorcycle rallies. Negligent riders are at fault for some of these accidents, but the majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by negligent drivers who do the following:
- Operate their vehicles under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
- Perform illegal lane changes that violate riders’ rights-of-way and leave them little or no time to avoid an accident
- Follow riders too closely and cause rear-end collisions that result in devastating injuries
- Run stop signs and disobey traffic signals
- Drive too fast for conditions
- Operate their vehicles in an aggressive manner to intimidate riders
- Engage in other negligent behavior that makes Florida roadways more dangerous for everyone
