Orlando Hit-and-Run Accident Fatally Injures 17-Year-Old Driver
Investigators with the Orlando Police Department are finding that they have more questions than answers when it comes to a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred this past Monday morning which claimed the life of a young teenager. Authorities are advising the public to be on the lookout for a 4-door white sedan that is believed to have been involved in this tragic accident.
Early reports indicate that it was shortly after 4:30 a.m. on July 13th, 2002 when 17-year-old Kevin Bernier was driving his vehicle along the highly-trafficked area of Colonial Drive and Hyer Avenue. As the young driver approached the typically busy intersection near the Fashion Square Mall, the white sedan currently in question crashed into the teenager from an unknown direction, and sped off westbound on Colonial Drive. The impact of the collision was so great that it knocked down an electrical pole causing power outages to traffic lights in the immediate area.
Local emergency response teams arrived at the crash site within minutes, and quickly assessed the damage to the victim and his vehicle. Sadly, the driver’s injuries were far too severe for him to recover from, and he passed away at the scene. The Orlando Police Department is now asking for anyone with information or video footage leading to the apprehension of the driver who allegedly caused this terrible auto accident to step forward and call the tipline at 321-235-5300.
Although it is currently unclear as to why this driver chose to flee the scene after this fatal collision, some common reasons include:
- The fear of being arrested.
- The driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Existing warrants from previous crimes.
There have been no known arrests at the time of this writing. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of this young man as they attempt to deal with this incredible loss.
