Young Teenager Struck and Killed During an Orlando Bicycle Accident
The Christmas celebrations have come to a full stop for an Orlando family this week after their 13-year-old child sustained fatal injuries after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle Wednesday evening in the Arbor Ridge West subdivision.
According to preliminary accident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol members operating within the Orlando city limits, it was approximately 7:45 p.m. on December 22, 2021, when a 13-year-old boy from Orlando was riding his bicycle eastbound along Montello Drive heading towards Tree Ridge Lane in the Arbor Ridge West housing division. As the young bicyclist approached the intersection of Montello Drive and Tree Ridge Lane, a driver behind the wheel of a 2021 Toyota Tacoma appeared from the westbound direction and crashed into the child. The newer model pickup truck proceeded on its collision course and ran over the teenager before fleeing the scene altogether.
Local Orange County authorities, emergency medical teams, and officers with the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the crash site by 9-1-1 center operators a few minutes after receiving the first distress calls. Upon their arrival, they quickly recognized the severe injuries suffered by the 13-year-old victim, and EMTs immediately started to prepare the child for transport. He was rushed to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, however, due to the severity of his injuries, the young boy was unable to survive and he tragically passed away before doctors and nurses could employ life-saving techniques.
Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department started their search for the driver and vehicle involved in the deadly hit-and-run accident shortly after the incident occurred. They were finally able to locate the Toyota Tacoma about a mile away from where the crash took place. They reportedly interviewed the owner of the pickup truck but it is unclear at this time if any arrests were made.
“For this family to have to lose their child, their 13-year-old son, right before Christmas, will forever change their lives,” said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kim Montes in a statement to the press.
