Miami-Dade Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Collision
Oftentimes when people hear the term “hit and run”, they think of coming out of the grocery store to find that their car has been dinged by an unknown driver. Rarely do we think of fatal accidents where the responsible driver flees the scene and leaves a severely injured person behind. Sadly, it is not uncommon for a driver to leave the scene of an accident with serious injuries or death out of fear of jail time or fines. What these people often don’t consider is that the penalties are much less severe when they stay at the scene.
But that is exactly what happened this week when a teenage driver allegedly stole a car, then struck and killed a bicyclist, then fled the scene on foot in northwest Miami-Dade. Fortunately, the young man turned himself in later that day. He was identified as 18-year-old Jonathan Alexander Taylor of Hialeah. According to police, the crash happened shortly before 5 a.m. on Monday January 4th, in the 5800 block of Northwest 199th Street. Taylor stole a four-door silver Mazda 6, lost control of the car, jumped the median and struck 67-year-old Braulio Perez who was riding his bicycle. Taylor fled the scene on foot and Perez was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where he later died of his injuries. Taylor faces charges of leaving the scene with a death, vehicular homicide and not having a valid driver’s license.
