Lake County Driver Arrested After Crashing Golf Cart Into Tree
Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department recently responded to an incident that involved an intoxicated driver, a golf cart, and a tree. The reports from the deputies who reached the scene first suggest that the incident began sometime during the day, however little exists within the report itself to say what exact time the incident took place.
It was close to a Publix located along U.S. 27 in the area of Four Corners within Lake County that a man was riding a golf cart close to the road. It is not clear if the individual was actually driving in the road at the time or if they were simply traveling near to the roadway, although witnesses to the entire incident stated that there was at least one incident when the individual nearly crashed into a car, a fact suggesting that the person in the golf cart was indeed driving near or on the roadway or a parking lot.
It is believed that the only person onboard the golf cart was a 58-year-old individual from South Clermont. In addition to telling deputies that the 58-year-old had nearly struck at least one other car, the witnesses indicated that they had reason to believe that the person aboard the golf cart was very, very drunk. It is believed that one of these witnesses was the individual to first call 9-1-1 to report the possibly dangerous actions of the 58-year-old in the golf cart.
Before deputies reached the area, the 58-year-old crashed their cart into a large tree. It is not known if the person suffered any injuries. It is also not known if the tree was badly damaged in the crash.
When deputies reached the area, they immediately found the individual in question and began the process of questioning them in order to assess their sobriety. The report states that it became clear to deputies almost immediately that the man was indeed highly intoxicated, with a strong smell of alcohol coming off of him as well as a noticeable inability to speak without slurring or stand up straight for any length of time.
The 58-year-old was arrested on a third offense of driving with a suspended license as well as a four-or-more DUI offense.
