Child Inside Car During DUI Crash in Davenport
Deputies within Polk County are investigating a drunk driver accident that took place on the morning of Tuesday, the 12th of May. The incident took place sometime before 10:00 a.m. and involved a single vehicle. Behind the wheel of this vehicle was a 37-year-old individual. In the car with her was a 4-year-old child. At the time of this writing, the driver is facing DUI charges, among other things.
What we currently know comes from reports issued by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. According to them, the collision took place along U.S. Highway 27, close to or at the intersection with Legacy Park Boulevard within the downtown area of Davenport. What exactly happened to cause the crash remains unclear, but it is apparent that the deputies who were at the scene following the incident immediately began to notice something strange about the behavior of the driver of the vehicle involved.
This person, the above-mentioned 37-year-old, gave many signs of being intoxicated, reported the deputies, and this included poor performance during a field sobriety test as well as a strong smell of alcohol whenever she breathed. Deputies also noticed that a 4-year-old child was inside of the car at the time of the crash. Fortunately, neither the child nor the mother was injured in the incident.
The woman was arrested by deputies and taken to the Polk County Jail. There, a breath test was administered. The results of this test showed that the woman had a blood alcohol content between .155 and .164. Because the legal limit within Florida is .08, the results showed that the woman was operating her vehicle with a BAC around twice what is allowed by the law.
The driver was booked into the jail and given a single DUI charge. In addition to the DUI, she was charged with neglect as well as endangerment of the child who was within the vehicle at the time of the incident. Again, it does not appear as though either the child or the woman were injured in the crash.
The reports did not indicate who gained custody of the child after the mother was arrested.
