Wrong-Way Collision in Hillsborough County Injures Three Drivers
Westbound traffic along Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County came to a complete stop for several hours last Friday morning after an alleged drunk driver caused a chain-reaction collision with multiple vehicles, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
It was approximately 3:40 a.m. on July 28, 2023, when 22-year-old Sarasota resident Arda Sengun was driving his vehicle in the eastern direction of the westbound lanes of I-4 near mile marker 10 by North Kingsway Road in Seffner. As he approached mile marker 12 close to McIntosh Road, he crashed into a Mercedes traveling within the inside lane of the interstate.
Moments after the initial accident occurred, the driver of a pickup located in the center lane slowed his truck to avoid the crash and was rear-ended by a flatbed truck. The impact from the secondary collision caused the flatbed truck to flip over, trapping the driver, while the pickup truck spun out of control onto the shoulder of the road where it slammed into a parked tractor-trailer.
Hillsborough County first responders and troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of the multi-vehicle pileup. Upon their arrival, medical teams transported the driver of the Mercedes and the driver of the pickup to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the flatbed truck was trapped for 90 minutes before being rescued and medevaced to the hospital. Everyone is expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities issued field sobriety tests to 22-year-old Arda Sengun at the crash site, and after he registered a BAC of 0.187, he was arrested and charged with DUI causing serious bodily injury.
