Two Killed in Rear-End Accident Caused By Drunken Driver
A recent rear-end auto accident that claimed the lives of an Orlando man and woman was caused by an impaired driver, according to Orlando Police. They say that the victims were the driver and passenger of a car that was struck from the rear as they slowed down to stop at a red light. Police officers report that the accident occurred on World Center Drive near the intersection with State Road 535. They say that the driver of a 2007 Toyota Corolla and his passenger were fatally injured when they were rear-ended by a 2010 Dodge Charger driven by a 20-year-old man, address unknown.
Police say the accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. one recent morning when the occupants of the Toyota were traveling in the eastbound center lane of World Center Drive. The suspected drunken driver was following the Toyota in the center lane, and, when it stopped at the light at S.R. 535, the driver slammed his Charger into the back of the Toyota, instantly killing the passenger in the back seat and fatally injuring the driver. The driver is facing DUI manslaughter and other charges in connection with the incident. It is unknown whether or not he was injured in the accident.
According to the most recent data on the Florida DMV website, law enforcement officials cited at least 55,522 drivers for driving under the influence in 2011, which led to 33,625 DUI convictions. Drunk drivers killed 2,398 people that year and injured thousands more who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when a negligent driver chose to drink and drive.
There is no doubt that drinking and driving is a choice, as public awareness campaigns, stepped-up law enforcement and increasingly tougher penalties have made it impossible for drivers to overlook the dangers of drunk driving. Still, tens of thousands of drivers continue to drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and, when they cause accidents, they can and should be held liable for their actions.
