Three Injured in an 11-Car Pileup in Winter Park
A large, multi-vehicle car accident that occurred within Winter Park early on the morning of Wednesday, March 20th, resulted in three people suffering from injuries and 11 vehicles sustaining damage. According to Lt. Kim Montes, the spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place close to 4:30 in the morning along Interstate 4 within the city of Orlando.
What we know about the incident so far is that numerous vehicles were traveling down Interstate 4 at this particular time. One of the drivers, who was behind the wheel of a car that was not described in Lt. Montes’ report, lost control of their vehicle close to where Interstate 4 intersects with Fairbanks Avenue. This driver was traveling down the western lanes of I-4, and before they were able to regain control of their vehicle, they collided with the center median that separates the western portions of the road from the eastern ones.
After striking the barrier, the car began to spin out of control, only coming to a stop after it had spun all the way from the center median to the center eastbound lane. The other cars in the area attempted to slow down and avoid the now incapacitated vehicle, but it appears that numerous drivers were not able to react to the incident in time. Because of this, a chain-reaction collision began to take place with numerous cars all colliding with one another. All in all, nine cars made up the first batch of crashed vehicles. Two more cars were involved in another collision that happened sometime shortly after the first, and the Florida Highway Patrol believes that this collision is directly related to the earlier pileup.
While the initial investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol was underway I-4 remained closed for several hours. It is not clear how long this closure lasted, but it was reopened sometime later that same day.
As stated above, three people were injured in the crash. One of these injuries is believed to have been critical in its scope. The severity and extent of the other two injuries was not made clear in the initial report.
