Single Car Crash in Daytona Beach Construction Zone Leaves One Dead
Reports from the Daytona Beach Police Department began to emerge regarding an auto accident which took place on Tuesday, July 16th, and resulted in the death of a single individual. According to these reports, it was just before 10:00 when the incident took place. Shortly before this time, a woman was driving a four-door Kia along a stretch of the Halifax River on a road that will soon be called the Orange Avenue Bridge, very close to both Silver Beach Avenue and Peninsula Drive.
Witnesses told the authorities that it appeared as though the person driving the car was traveling at an unusually advanced rate of speed through a construction zone, and the reports did indicate that the police are treating the driver of the Kia’s speed as a crucial factor in the subsequent crash and fatality.
It is not clear exactly what happened, but it appears that the driver of the Kia lost control of their vehicle as they cruised through the construction zone. Before the driver of the Kia could regain control, the car hit something that caused it to be launched through the air. It was while the car was airborne that its top half came into contact with a massive concrete pylon that will soon be a permanent feature of the new bridge. The concrete sliced the top of the car completely off and, it is believed, killed the woman instantly. When the car landed, it was immediately partially submerged in the water over which the bridge will cross.
When firefighters reached the scene, they pulled the body of the driver from the vehicle. Although the official autopsy results have yet to confirm the initial statement of the authorities, they are fairly certain that the cause of death will be attributed to the collision between the car and the pylon.
At the time of this writing, no further details relating to the incident are available. This means that the precise reasons behind the crash remain unclear. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing as police within Daytona Beach attempt to gather all possible information from witnesses in order to answer, as completely as possible, the still present questions regarding the fatal incident.
