One Dead, One Injured After Car Overturns in Columbia County
A collision involving a single car that took place in northern Florida on Tuesday, October 1st, resulted in the death of an Apopka woman and the serious injury of another individual. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that this incident took place along a stretch of I-75 that runs through Columbia County at some point during the afternoon of the Tuesday in question.
At this time, a 61-year-old Apopka man was behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima and headed down the northern lanes of I-75. It is not clear exactly what happened within the cab of the car to cause the individual to lose control, but as they made their way down the road this is exactly what took place. Before the individual was able to regain control of the car, they traveled into and across the median as well as the southbound lanes of I-75. It was after crossing over the entirety of I-75 southern lanes that the car crossed the western shoulder and then collided with a tree. As a result of the force of the crash with the tree, the Altima overturned.
Inside of the car, the driver was accompanied by a 60-year-old passenger. Due to the severity of the crash and the corresponding injuries that this individual sustained, they were declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel who arrived to assist. The 61-year-old driver was also injured, although they were still alive when the emergency response crews reached the area. The driver was then carefully pulled from the wrecked vehicle and taken via ambulance to the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital, located in Gainesville. At the time of this writing, the condition of the 61-year-old is not clear, although we do know that when they arrived at the hospital they were deemed to be in serious condition.
As stated above, no other vehicles were involved in the crash and no other people were injured as a result of the car hitting the tree and overturning. As the investigation continues updates will emerge from the authorities most connected with the case.
