Narrow Escape from Burning Truck Aided by Good Samaritans
Due to an inspiring act of selflessness, a motorist passing through Miami-Dade County on Wednesday, February 13th, was saved from their vehicle after being involved in a car accident that quickly turned into a car fire. Reports from WPLG indicated that the incident happened sometime during the afternoon, while cars and trucks were traveling along Interstate 95, south of the Dolphin Expressway. One of these vehicles, a pickup truck, was headed down an unknown lane of the road when it was involved in a collision with an SUV.
Reports thus far do not outline just what happened to cause the collision, and we are not sure at this time whether or not the authorities believe one or the other of the drivers involved was primarily responsible for the crash. What we do know is that as a result of the collision the pickup truck began first to smoke and then to belch large flames.
At this point in time, a driver passing along Interstate 95 saw the flames. After close scrutiny of the accident, it was apparent that the driver within the pickup truck was alive and attempting to escape from the vehicle. For reasons that are not immediately clear, their efforts were not fruitful, and as the passerby watched they became increasingly convinced that they would need to do something in order to save the trapped man.
Pulling over, the witness then rushed over to the scene. For reasons that are not clear, after exiting their vehicle the witness decided to first film the flames with his phone, shouting for the person inside the burning car to escape. When the individual replied that they were in fact unable to flee from their vehicle, the witness put their phone away and rushed over to offer more tactile assistance. With the help of another, unnamed, witness, the individual inside of the pickup truck was yanked from the vehicle even as the flames were beginning to lap at their legs.
The driver of the pickup truck was transported from the area of the crash to Jackson Memorial Hospital where they received treatment for burn wounds among other things.
It is not clear if the driver of the SUV was at all injured in the incident.
No charges are currently pending.
