Driver Injured in Crash at Orange County Speed World Dragway
The Orlando Speed World Dragway is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Giving people both the opportunity to watch and participate in high-speed racing, it has become a place for professional and amateur racers to rub elbows, and for everyone present to enjoy the loud roar of engines pushed to their limit. However, this past Wednesday visitors to the Dragway witnessed a horrifying end to one individual’s race.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol and the Orange County firefighters, an accident occurred at the Dragway on East Colonial Drive when a driver—who has as of yet been named—traveling at excessively high speeds seems to have lost control of the vehicle. This in turn caused the car to swerve violently and collide directly with a barrier wall used to separate the track from the grandstands and surrounding landscape.
The Florida Highway Patrol report goes on to state that the car subsequently flipped over onto its roof in a forested area just off the track. Emergency response crews were called and a rescue operation was launched to extract the driver from the destroyed vehicle. Before this could take place, a tow truck was needed to haul the car from the trees. As soon as they could, the emergency response teams—led by the Orange County firefighters—pulled the injured man from the car and rushed him to the hospital. As of this moment, no updates regarding the driver’s condition have been released to the general public.
Due to the uncertain circumstances surrounding the accident, a detailed and extensive investigation will be spearheaded by the Florida Highway Patrol. They will examine variables such as the quality of the roadway where the accident took place, the known condition of the car before it was driven by the injured driver, and look into all the records relating to this accident to ensure that all the proper safety protocol was followed in the moments leading up to the crash.
The officials and staff from the Dragway itself have not responded as of yet to any inquiries made regarding the accident and they have not released any statement regarding the accident.
