Driver Crashes into Orlando Retention Pond
This past Sunday, at some point during the afternoon, an elderly man was attempting to navigate the parking lot for the Advanced Auto Parts located on Lake Underhill Road in Orlando when he somehow lost control of his vehicle. One of the crash’s witnesses, a woman who is employed at an animal hospital located near to the Advanced Auto Parts, told the Orlando Police Department that she saw the incident occur and was ultimately able to rush to the assistance of the car’s driver after he became trapped inside their vehicle as it sank into a nearby pond.
It seems that the driver in question was behind the wheel of his Toyota Corolla when he pulled into the Advanced Auto Parts lot. While searching for a parking spot, the man accidentally collided with a Camaro also parked in the lot. Another individual was at work on the Camaro when the Corolla collided with it, and this individual was also struck by the Corolla.
After he struck the Camaro and the Camaro’s owner, the man behind the wheel of the Corolla lost control of the vehicle. It shot forward and scraped along the side of the Advanced Auto Parts building before accelerating out of the lot and crashing into a retention pond located nearby. Due to the pressure of the surrounding water, the driver of the Corolla was not able to get the car’s doors open.
It was at this point that the animal hospital employee literally leapt into action. Running towards the car, she waded through the retention ponds water until she was able to reach the door. The woman was then able to either force the door open or smash a window and pull the driver to safety.
Shortly afterwards, emergency response crews arrived at the scene to help. The man who was working on the Camaro when he was struck by the Corolla was transported to a local hospital and treated for a handful of minor injuries. Despite the plunge into the retention pond, the driver of the Corolla was not noticeably injured in the incident and it was believed that they did not receive transport to a hospital; however, they were issued a citation for driving that the authorities deemed reckless.
