Two Women Suffer Serious Injuries After a Head-On Collision in Pinellas County
Authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Pinellas County have opened a formal investigation into a head-on collision that severely injured a pregnant 32-year-old driver, her 34-year-old passenger, and claimed the life of an unborn child early Monday morning along 54th Avenue North in Lealman.
According to initial collision reports from responding officers with the Florida Highway Patrol, it was shortly before 6 a.m. on August 23, 2021, when a 46-year-old man was driving his vehicle the wrong way down 54th Avenue North in the eastern direction of the westbound, inside lane. At this same time, a 32-year-old mother-to-be and resident of St. Petersburg was traveling beside her 34-year-old female passenger with the correct flow of westbound traffic on 54th Avenue North. For reasons that are currently unknown, the male motorist did not make any attempts to avoid a collision with the women in the oncoming vehicle and he crashed into them head-on.
Within a matter of minutes, emergency response teams and local law enforcement agencies from around Pinellas County arrived at the scene of the auto accident to assist severely injured individuals. The female victims were discovered with serious life-threatening injuries as a result of the accident and were transported to a local hospital for further medical treatments. Sadly, due to the extremely severe nature of her injuries, the 32-year-old driver suffered a miscarriage and lost her baby. The 34-year-old passenger also sustained serious injuries in the tragic collision and both women remain hospitalized as they begin the long road to recovery. The other driver involved in this incident was unharmed in the crash.
No charges have currently been filed in this case as of yet, however, the fact that the male driver was allegedly at fault for driving on the wrong side of the road combined with the death of the woman’s unborn child could potentially bring about legal ramifications for the 46-year-old St. Petersburg man.
