Two Family Members Killed During Four-Car Crash in Hernando County
According to troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol, a 35-year-old mother and her 6-month old son both suffered fatal injuries on Monday during a multi-vehicle collision along U.S. 19 near Berkeley Manor Boulevard in Spring Hill.
Preliminary accident reports from the responding officers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was shortly after 10 a.m. on January 10, 2022, when the 35-year-old mother from Weeki Wachee was driving with her 6-month-old son in the eastbound direction of Breakwater Boulevard. As her vehicle approached U.S. 19, she entered the intersection in order to turn north onto the highway, and immediately after she performed this maneuver, a pickup truck driving the wrong direction down the road entered the vicinity of her vehicle and violently crashed into her car. The momentum from the first collision propelled the pickup into a nearby SUV that was pulled over in the left-turn lane and then the SUV was pushed into a fourth vehicle in the area.
Several Spring Hill law enforcement agencies and first responders were dispatched to the four-car crash within a matter of minutes, including authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol. Emergency medical teams quickly determined that the 35-year-old mother died due to the severe nature of her injuries. Her 6-month old infant son was transported to a local hospital for additional treatment but he passed away shortly after arrival.
An unidentified driver and their passenger in the fourth vehicle, and the 73-year-old Melbourne man who was driving the SUV at the time of the deadly accident were unharmed in the incident.
The 30-year-old driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries.
Although the investigation is continuing to unfold, investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol currently believe that the pickup truck involved in this accident was possibly involved in a collision prior to causing this fatal collision.
