Suspect Arrested a Year Later for Hit-and-Run with Teen Skateboarder
After nearly a year to the exact date, authorities with the Orlando Police Department were finally able to arrest a 20-year-old man for his connection to a hit-and-run crash that severely injured a teenager last January.
According to reports from the initial auto accident, it was on January 29, 2022, when Joshua Sims, who was sixteen when the incident occurred, was riding his skateboard near the intersection of Bonneville Drive and East Colonial Drive. At this same time, Irving Delgado Alcantar was approaching the same intersection in a blue Ford Focus. His vehicle slammed into the young skateboarder and fled the scene. Alacantar then allegedly ditched the Ford Focus at a Circle K gas station approximately five miles away from the crash site.
Emergency response teams in Orlando arrived at the scene of the accident and immediately rushed Joshua Sims to the Orlando Regional Medical Center where he underwent two brain surgeries and remained in a medically-induced coma for almost a month.
Investigators with the Orlando Police Department were able to track the abandoned Ford’s registration back to the driver’s sister. When questioned about the vehicle, she told officers that “her brother called her and said he thought he hit someone.”
Twenty-year-old Irving Delgado Alcantar was taken into custody last Friday, but has since been released after posting $25,000 for bail. He told investigators that he fled the scene because had a small child in the vehicle at the time of the car crash and was scared for the safety of the baby.
A GoFundMe account has been in place since the accident occurred to help the family with ongoing medical expenses and the page’s latest update indicates that Joshua Sims now resides at a rehabilitation facility which specializes in traumatic brain injuries. “I just remind him that he’s a fighter. I tell him that I love him,” she said. “He’s a miracle and he’s so strong. And…I just feel so blessed. We’re so blessed,” his mother said in a statement to the press after hearing about Alcantar’s arrest.
