Sumter County Head-On Crash Kills One, Seriously Injures Two Others

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on February 14, 2021

Head-on collisions are without a doubt the most aggressive and violent automobile accidents that can take place on the roadway. Due to the force with which each of the cars strike one another, the violence inflicted on the inhabitants of the vehicles is often much greater than that which those in other sorts of accidents might suffer.

On Tuesday, February 9th, a head-on crash within Sumter County resulted in the death of a single individual as well as the serious injury of all the other people involved. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place close to 2:30 on the afternoon of the day in question. At this time, a 53-year-old from McAlpin was behind the wheel of a pickup truck and driving down the southern lanes of State Road 471 when they drew near to the intersection of County Road 788 and State Road 471. It is believed that the pickup had not yet reached the intersection when the driver attempted to leave their lane in order to pass a vehicle moving more slowly.

In order to pass the slower vehicle, the 53-year-old needed to pull their vehicle into the opposite lane of travel. For reasons that are not clear, it appears as though the driver of the pickup truck did not ensure that no vehicles were traveling down this opposite lane when they swerved to pass the car before them. As a result, they failed to note that a second pickup truck being driven by a 72-year-old from Zolfo Springs was traveling in this lane.

The two pickup trucks crashed head-to-head with one another while still traveling at an advanced rate of speed. When paramedics and EMTs reached the scene, there was nothing they could do for the 72-year-old driver of the second pickup truck. This person was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

A passenger within the second pickup as well as the 53-year-old driver of the first pickup were also severely injured in the crash. Both were transported from the crash site to a nearby hospital for treatment. No updates have yet emerged regarding their conditions.

The collision remains under investigation.
