Street-Race in Collier County Results in Violent Single-Car Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on March 19, 2020

The problem of young people drag-racing through residential areas cropped up once again during the earlier days of March after a street race in Collier County turned into a crash investigation site and two teenagers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries. Reports from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office stated that the incident happened during the weekend of March 6th-8th and involved two cars and an unknown number of passengers.

A video taken by a security camera owned by a person within the neighborhood shows the entirety of the event. First, a black SUV passes down the road. It is closely followed by another, smaller car. After they pass out of the frame there is a moment of silence before both of them once again reappear, this time driving side-by-side, and driving at a clearly advanced rate of speed. As they progress down the road, it is clear that the SUV is positioned so that its passenger wheels are hanging slightly off of the asphalt and riding along the grass of the shoulder. The driver of the SUV then attempts to move fully off of the shoulder and back onto the roadway, but this brings them close to striking the other vehicle. In order to avoid a collision, the driver of the SUV over-corrects their direction, and swerves completely off of the road. Dirt goes flying as the driver applies the brakes in a last-ditch effort to stop the car, but their speed is too great and they hit a culvert with a tremendous amount of force. This causes the car to launch completely off of the ground, overturn mid-air, and come crashing back down onto its roof.

When the emergency response crews reached the area, they pulled two teenagers from the wreckage, both of whom were alive but badly injured. The extent of the injuries is not clear at this time. It is not believed that the driver of the second car remained at the scene. It is believed that the authorities are now searching for this individual.

While the full extent of the injuries suffered by the young people is not known, we do know that they remained alive despite the extreme violence of the crash.
