Seminole County Car Accident Breaks BMW in Half, Killing Teen
It was a tragic end to the month of July in Seminole County after a group of young adults were seriously injured, one fatally, when their vehicle struck a tree along the side of the road near Lake Mary. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the force of impact was so extreme that it ripped the car in half upon impact.
It was approximately 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28th, 2020 when officers with the FHP first started to receive calls about a vehicle that was allegedly traveling at an increased rate of speed northbound on Country Club Road in Seminole County. Within this vehicle, which was eventually identified as a 2018 BMW, were 3 people: the 21-year-old male driver from Sanford, a 19-year-old male passenger, and a 16-year-old female passenger from Deltona. As the car quickly approached the area of Country Club Road and Continental Boulevard, the young driver failed to properly maneuver a curve in the road and crashed the BMW into a nearby tree.
As a result of this violent collision, the vehicle was severed into two pieces, trapping its occupants in the process. Local resident Vince Catallotzi heard the accident, dialed 9-1-1, then rushed outside to help. “I just heard the big explosion and we came running out. All the people in the car were screaming,” he told Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Kim Montes.
First responders immediately rushed to the accident to find that all three individuals had been injured. Despite their best efforts, the 19-year-old passenger tragically passed away at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. The driver of the BMW was also seriously injured and he was transported via ambulance to Central Florida Regional Hospital. His condition at the time of this writing is unknown. Lastly, the 16-year-old passenger only sustained minor injuries and was also treated at the hospital.
This fatal auto accident is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, according to Lt. Montes. She stated that once they are able to recreate the crash site and speak with the surviving witnesses, then they will have a better understanding as to what exactly happened and how to proceed with charges against the driver.
